“I realized very early the power of food to evoke memory, to bring people together, to transport you to other places and I wanted to be a part of that.”
WELCOME TO IDA-BELLE’S SOUTHERN KITCHEN
Founded on a deep adoration for our late housekeeper, Ida Bell.
May her memory live through my cookin".
MY STORY
Who is Ida-Belle?
Ida Bell Dassie was her name. She started out as our housekeeper but quickly became family. Ida didn't know how to read, write, or drive a car. My mom would pick her up and drop her off, taught her how to sign her name, assisted in her obtaining Social Security benefits and whatever else she may have needed during her time with us. Ida didn't have much but would always share her garden bounty, government peanut butter and "Ida-isms" just to name a few.
When I began this journey, I wanted the name to reflect something I could relate to and be proud of. Ida-Belle's Southern Kitchen fit that description perfectly. It's my way of honoring Ida and bridging the gap between two cultures that had one thing in common; we needed each other.
Ida has since passed away leaving behind many memories for us to look back and smile about while taking comfort in knowing we will be together again. I feel confident she is rocking in a well loved chair on the porch of her mansion in the sky.
May you feel a sense of comfort when we meet, may each bite evoke a priceless memory for you of times past and may you know that I appreciate each and every chance I am given to cook for you and yours.
As in life, things grow and change. There are highs and lows, pains and celebrations. Like those memorable pencil marks on the wall in your childhood home, Ida-Belle's Southern Kitchen has certainly felt all of those milestones. From pulling the trailer around town with my late daddy's 1999 Chevy Silverado "Big Daddy" to now catering and being invited in to peoples homes as a private chef preparing meals and making memories. Those growing pains prepared me for the current and best chapter of my professional life.
I look forward to each day and the opportunities presented to me. The good Lord has been good to this ol' girl and God willing I will continue to be abundantly blessed and do what I truly love.
All my very best,
- Lauren
